While there does not exist a thing such as good addiction, it can be said that one of the worst and deadly addictions is the addiction to cigarettes and tobacco. Cigarettes and tobacco products have an addictive chemical in them called nicotine, and it gets absorbed in the lungs when smokers inhale the smoke. And compared to non-smokers, the smoker population has a higher death rate, and this is mainly due to the deadly chemicals and toxins contained in tobacco smoke.

When people try to get rid of this habit and are denied access to cigarettes or nicotine, at least some will experience irritability, mild shivers, dry mouth and increased heart beats. These are some of the withdrawal symptoms of nicotine, and as one goes on longer without depending on tobacco or tobacco products, one can have insomnia and may fall into mild depression. When compared to the withdrawal symptoms induced by drugs and alcohol, this does not create any noticeable alterations to the smokers’ personality. When in the period of withdrawal from nicotine, it has been reported to cause distress in people, but only if they are addicted to nicotine and smoking. Smokers who have no addiction to these products will never experience such abnormal things.

According to a study report published by the World Health Organization, in developed countries, 26 percentage of male and 9 percentages of female deaths are attributed to smoking. Tobacco use is an important element in the recent increase in premature deaths all over the world and is a preventable risk for people in developed countries. However, smoking rates in developed countries have diminished by almost half in the period between 1965 and 2006. On the contrary, in developing countries, cigarette and tobacco use has been rising over the past few years.  Tobacco smoke contains more than 5000 chemicals out of which 69 are rated as highly deadly carcinogens. Two of theses carcinogens are acrolein and benzopyrene. Other well known toxins contained in it are carbon monoxide and cyanide.

Similar to other kinds of drugs, tobacco and nicotine in cigarettes have damaging effects on the psychological front also. In the beginning, smokers could experience nausea and dizziness. But with regular use, these feelings will subside and the body system will get used to the smoke and nicotine in cigarettes. Nicotine works in the same way as caffeine and affects the nervous system. For some, it helps one in the mind's concentration ability, but could cost your health and life. One needs to realize the harmful effects of smoking. The damages caused by smoking and use of tobacco are many; it can cause cancer of the lung and throat. Many smokers try to quit the habit of smoking; but giving up is not very easy.  Only a few manage to quit without resorting to some sort of aids. However armed with right knowledge and strong willpower, you too can overcome this addiction.
